2030 Gure Udal Agenda. The role of municipalities in the Sustainable Development Goals

This has undoubtedly been a peculiar year and for many local entities, town councils and county entities, it has been a time to reflect on their role in the Sustainable Development Goals. We have had the privilege of leading and participating in many of these sessions in more than 50 Basque municipalities.

In municipalities in Gipuzkoa through the 2030 Gure Udal Agenda service, promoted by the Basque Government, we have observed very diverse and enriching reflections on the role of municipalities in supporting the achievement of the Goals in the next decade. We have witnessed enriching debates between municipal staff (technical and political) working in areas as diverse as social welfare, gender equality, the environment, economic development, or the promotion of culture and the Basque language, and who find in the 2030 Agenda a possible model of transversal and participatory governance in which to also consider economic and social agents.

In addition, we have shared and conducted sessions with a Working Group promoted and made up of around 30 town councils from the Udalsarea 2030 Network. Working sessions have been held, mainly of a technical nature in this case, led by entities with very diverse characteristics, such as the Town Councils of Vitoria-Gasteiz, Zarautz, Sestao or Oñati, as well as regional entities such as Iraurgi Berritzen or the Uribe Kosta Association.

Although there is still a long way to go, the main idea that we take away from all these sessions is that the Local Agenda 2030 is seen in the municipalities as a great opportunity, a model that, by valuing all the existing assets, renews the governance model, finally giving way to a transversal and transparent model that counts on the involvement of citizens and social and economic agents.
