SDG Flandes navarre

On 16 June 2021, the Joint Research Center (JRC) of the European Commission organised the virtual meeting ‘Localising the SDGs in Europe: local and regional indicators and multilevel governance’ which brought together more than 100 participants from Europe, Asia and Latin America.

Alessandro Rainoldi, Head of Unit of the JRC, opened the session and presented three specific reports carried out in the framework of the URBAN 2030 project, on the experiences of European local and regional governments that are already in the process of localising and monitoring the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda.

Among them, we present the report by ADOS ‘Regional indicators for the Sustainable Development Goals. An analysis based on the cases of the Basque Country, Navarre and Flanders’, where we propose a panel of regional indicators for monitoring the SDGs in Europe, inspired by the three case studies analysed. In addition, another report exploring the use of local indicators in European Local Reports between 2016 and early 2021 was also presented; and finally, an analysis of the Basque Country’s SDG ecosystem focusing on SDG localisation and multilevel governance.

The open discussion, moderated by Alice Siragusa (JRC), benefited from contributions from three international experts (Geir Graff, Inmaculada Herrador and Agnieszka Widuto) who provided constructive comments on the value of voluntary local assessments, the soundness of the methodology of the European Handbook for VLR, and reflections on the choice and relevance of indicators, as well as suggestions for new avenues of research.

Markku Markkula, Vice-President of the EU Committee of the Regions, concluded the event. He underlined the importance of SDG implementation and the need to reach more regions in a strategic and effective way. He also advised taking advantage of the tools and resources available from the JRC, including the recent SDG reports and roadmap materials, to strengthen current and future initiatives.

The presentations and the recording of the event are available at the following link.
